What is Kendo?
- Kendo is a sport and its name. It is an individual martial arts competition in which competition is performed by applying the mechanics of the bamboo sword (sword), and victory or defeat is decided according to the set rules of competition and judging. According to the division of the game, the swords are divided into swords (刀), swords (劍), wooden swords (木劍), and bamboo swords (竹刀).
History
- In 1970, the International Kendo Federation was officially established, with 17 member states at the time.
The international name of Kendo is '劍道' in Chinese, and 'Kendo' in English, and the International Federation is 'Intenational Kendo Federation'.
As the International Kendo Federation joined the GAISF (General Federation of International Sports Federations) in April 2006, the abbreviation of the International Kendo Federation was changed from I.K.F to F.I.K in French. As of October 2021, 62 countries/regions are affiliated with FIK.
The tools for kendo
- The tools for kendo include the dobok (道服), the hogu (護具), the bamboo sword (竹刀), and the wooden sword (木劍).
Hogu is divided into Homyeon (護面) that protects the head and face, Howan (護腕) that protects the wrists, Gap (甲) that protects the chest and body, and Gapsang (甲裳) that is used semi-permanently.
